Designed to be the center of conversation & illuminate discourse, the altered form, full of character and shadows, is intended to cast a new light on our perceptions and inspire reflection with unfinished humility.
Shoulders at some angles, roots at others, the body emanates boldness and has strength in its posture. The stem, cap, socket, and shade, constructed from unfinished brass, turn gold everything in their glow.
After first being thrown as a symmetrical bottle on the potter’s wheel, indentations were made, followed by long pulls applied to the outside walls with a rib tool. Simultaneously pulling with the rib, the inner walls were supported with a telescoping sponge. After drying and before its firing, a meticulous and lengthy process called burnishing was used to seal and provide a sheen to its porous surface without the use of glaze.
Form No.1 is the first in a series of similarly altered forms with black stoneware and unfinished brass construction. Created during the early weeks of the ongoing demonstations following the murder of George Floyd, this piece became an unintentioned catalyst for reflection, introspection, and conversation.
