Expectations and Care for Your Throwing Gauge

  • As the tool is used, the brass will patina and the powder coated steel will show surface scratches, and your gauge will have surface scratches when you receive it, as it has been conditioned to be ready for use
  • The brass parts are unfinished (no lacquer, usually dull, and will show signs of manufacturing) and you are welcome to polish on occasion if you choose to slow down the patina process for aesthetic, though the care instructions outlined below should suffice for function
  • Use a dry cloth to clean before storage
  • Store with tip housing pointed down and tip recessed
  • If necessary, the tip guide can unscrew easily with dry fingers or even more easily if wearing gloves with rubber fingers
  • Never use abrasive tools, like pliers, to remove or tighten the tip guide, as this will damage the brass
  • Do NOT attempt to remove the entirety of the brass tip housing, as this has been sealed and only the tip and tip guide are designed to be removed
  • Use a dry q-tip to gently clean any clay or water from inside of the tip housing
  • Storing your gauge with the tip guides disassembled is NOT recommended, as these parts are small and can be easily misplaced
  • Never fully submerge your gauge, and while you’re expected to splash it while in-use, just be sure it is dry before storage and do not leave the base sitting in water for extended periods of time
  • The tips are not sharp, but the tool is relatively heavy, so KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
