The DAVEY Throwing Gauge is a precision reference tool for potters looking to replicate a form multiple times in a single throwing session. The gauge is designed for simple or complex forms, which require a single or multiple reference points.

Constructed from unfinished brass and powder coated steel, the gauge is built for daily use and for many years to come. Attached to the 16in. center shaft by-way-of clutch swivels are two 12in. adjustable arms, capped with DAVEY’s hand-fabricated, receding, weighted tips. These extend the arms another inch. The friction articulation at the arm midpoint provides optimum flexibility to reach nearly any angle above the wheel head.

The proprietary magnetic tip and housing  allow for the potter to nudge their reference point out of the way once the form is achieved. The tip and tip guide can be removed for cleaning clay or water from inside the tip housing. If misplaced, replacement tips and guides can be purchased in sets of two.

Background:

As I have delved into ceramics over the past few years, and have accumulated  measuring and throwing tools from incredible makers like HsinChuen Lin and Michael Sherrill, the throwing gauge has been elusive to me.  In discussing with fellow potters, it sounded as though most know of their existence, but no one knows where to find one.

Professionally, I have spent the last 7 years solving problems for Fortune 1000’s and Federal Agencies within the context of various software startups. Creating efficiencies both internally and externally is what comes naturally to me, and if given the right tools, I’d choose to do so as seamlessly and beautifully as possible & with little maintenance required.

Like many others during COVID, I found myself evaluating my priorities, and have spent most of my time creating efficiencies for myself, like building this website, creating my pottery & lamp-making workshop at home in DC, and setting up my new kiln a few blocks down the street.

One of my looming inefficiencies had been throwing the same shape in succession without stopping frequently to measure its depth and width and subsequently losing my “groove.” So, I designed something for myself, but with fellow potters in-mind.

Despite my software sales tendencies for creating streams of recurring revenue, I designed the DAVEY Throwing Gauge with the goal of never having to sell a replacement part, though they are guaranteed for two years in case of a rare defect.
